Managing Oneself by Peter F. Drucker


I purchased this book by Peter Drucker in 11-27-2015. This is a Harvard Business Review series about management practice and will influence business today.  Each volume ha ideas that has shape best practice and inspired many mangers sound the world and will change how you think about business in the 21st century.  History shows us that Napoleon, a da Vinci and Mozart can manage themselves with great success; if you want success history will prove you have the abilities to change your business for success even in a weak economy. What I loved best about this book if the fact that we have to place ourselves where we can make the greatest contribution.  In other words, stop trying to fix your weaknesses and concentrate on your strengths.  It is imparitive that your values and the value of the organization you work for are compatible otherwise it’s best to get out and find where you can use your strengths elsewhere.  Find a job or organization where you belong and your life will balance itself out.  This is managing yourself!  This book is for people who want to create the career path by knowing when to seize opportunities and when to change course.  If you are ready for a change this one hour reading will change your life and career for the best in 2016!  © 2016 Jackie Paulson

A spiritual walkabout is a metaphysical book by Peter Watson Jenkins. His book is about the personal journey from religion to spirituality on his own personal level. Readers who are open minded will enjoy a different perspective that breaks free of past beliefs and change their life. He opens the s tory revealing about a movie called “Walkabout” in 1971. Also in 1985 another movie called “vision quest” is mentioned to give you an idea of how he found his rite of passage so to speak as the Native Americans did. Both give the experience of providing a turning point in a young person’s life, bringing into reality of personal spiritual self-discovery. His book encourages readers to see the fact that in the 21st century consumers are pressured to adopt to “other people’s ideas,” buy the goods other have to sell, support causes of others and agree with other belief systems. This book is intended to be different if it fails the author is okay with that. He wanted to show his own spiritual walkabout which took him away from conformity towards freedom of choice. The challenges us not to be a carbon copy of others and leave you thinking about you, your own ideas and conviction. I was given this book free for my honest review. © 2016 Jackie Paulson

How to Think by Rick Norwood

Rick Norwood wrote his book to teach all of his readers how to think, it is very easy to read and only 61 pages. Many people try to avoid thinking with drowning their thoughts with television, video games, cell hones etc. You will learn by reading and by controlling yoru thoughts. This book will be useful if you want to learn to think clearly, solve problems and express your ideas more persuasive. Their are 14 Chapters and at the end of each chapter there are helpful exercises to help sharpen your skills. Here is a short list:
Start a "thoughts journal" to make you more aware of your own mind and how it works.
Identify useless thoughts in order to think better thoughts.
Play a game with google, type in a word and see if you can find just one hit. That is a good one!
Only think happy thoughts.
Write down three things that you know about because you were there, write what happened with what you saw with your eyes.
Read every night before you go to bed for at least 15 minutes.
Think of a question and focus on one topic only for a day.
I learned a lot, but it also reminded me of the law of attraction books and the power of now book. Focus keeps clarity.

This is a book that existing and future Project Managers will need to read and learn the lessons she did to take preventative measures in their own projects and helps businesses from failing in the future.  We all learn from our mistakes.  People want "instant gratification" and want the product and services faster and cheaper than the competition.  In the future supply and demand for Project Managers, the IT industry will not suffer in the area of employment. With technology changing at the speed of lightening all around the world.  What I learned to be of most value to myself as a Technical Manager Degree master is that J.P. Morgan Chase & Company in 2012 had its biggest failure due to an Excel spreadsheet with formula's that miscalculated market advice with incorrect calculations copied over throughout the spreadsheets and if the Chief Investment Officer was more careful the person would of verified the calculations and instead did not and the project produced a loss in trades around six billion.  Since then the failure has now lead to wide spread improvements across the board.
Most common reasons Projects Fail:
System and user requirements which means their needs to be adequate and Clear requirement so the project will not fail as in the past.
The Gap is another one, which means that the IT system’s requirements and what is expected of it needs to be a priority.
Non-compliance which mean that Project managers need to know the current laws in order for it to not fail.  The laws needs to be laid out so the company will really know what it is getting into so that no legal troubles come down the road to cost more money for the business.
Failing to consider integration which involves analyzing the project from an enterprise level.  This means that Project manager need to take into consideration how the IT project will work with important business processes.  Most important businesses need to consider how well the program it uses if it will work with the project a whole and keep it running smoothly as a whole from start to finish.
Not bringing in experts, think about it the experts are needed when coming up with an IT program's requirements, time needs to be taken with designing a system's projects.  The only solution is to bring in Subject Matter experts.
Looking for a problem which for an IT project to be a success the requirements need to solve a problem that businesses and companies have in the first place which is cost effective.  The solution is that stakeholders of an IT project need to know what problems need to be solves so they can cater their product to those specific issues.
Drifting is when the requirements simply do not go with the business case, and IT project can be going the wrong direction.  Keeping projects on tract at whatever the cost needs to be the goal.
Architecture is controlled by Requirements which means that this can slow down an IT project.  The requirements will do its job and tell what the architecture will need in order for the project to become successful.
Misguided priorities which means that a company’s priorities need to be accurate for the success of an IT project. In conclusion to help the failure of IT projects there are things that can be done to help the company to either lessen the impact or failure of the project.  This means that the committee should be led by a senior business executive who does not serve also as the chief information officer but also includes senior staff members whose occupations are from areas or lines of business that would be affected by the system created, if not the business changes should delivered in such a way that meets expected benefits.

Do you like authors that writes topics that most people try to avoid?  This book is simply intended to share DePetro’s experiences; to explain the practice of applying logical and reasonable thinking to circumstances in your own life and belief system. QUOTE: “When the mind is trying to protect itself it becomes defensive and stops listening and can close the door to new ideas, because accepting something as true or not true might force us to accept a list of other truths in a domino effect that we simply are unwilling to accept.”  After reading that in the first chapter I knew this self-awareness book would be a thought provoking and journal type of reading manual. I really liked when the author tells us that “SPOCK” from Star Trek Zachary Quinto as Spock in the 2009 Star Trek filmis different than all the other characters because he could look at real facts and arrive at a logical truth without the filter of human emotions; this is a great example of determining real truth.  As humans our ego and our emotions deceive us.  Many professionals in a wide variety of careers are able to create success by implementing the “SPOCK” character in real life!  What an eye opener.  This book is designed to help you make sense of dealing with or how not to deal with a toxic personality disorder so that you can protect or self from being used in ways that undermine your self-esteem. This book I for anyone who would like to improve their self-awareness and discover the source of undesirable patterns and habits.  I hope many readers find this book inspirational and teach you how your belief’s can prevent you from discoing your undesirable patterns of thoughts, perceptions and habits to engage  life more satisfied and less judgmental.

Did you know that Narcissism is a personality disorder?  This book is about just that topic.  Have you ever been around a person who has an inflated perception of themselves and little regard for others?  Inside your head you ask, “Does anyone care about how my day has gone?” This is the Narcissism person many of you have been around and felt like it’s better not to “rock the boat”, but in reality you want to express your feelings but nothing seems to come out of your mouth.  At the end of this book you will be able to identify what a Narcissistic person is and what to do to cope with those around you that may have this toxic personality.  I know I have seen it many times in the work environment.  If you want to be able to learn about Narcissism and the problems they create and make your own changes to help you survive and reason with one, this book will be a go to guide.  This book is designed to help you make sense of dealing with or how not to deal with a toxic personality disorder so that you can protect or self from being used in ways that undermine your self-esteem. What I liked most about this book is the details on the seven deadly sins of Narcissism which include; shame, magical thinking, arrogance, envy, entitlement, exploitation and bad boundaries of which bad boundaries is where I learned the most as I do deal with Narcissism on a daily basis.  It is a relief to have a book to help me realize I am not the problem, they are and how to deal with them.
